In our Shop Earn-A-Bike Program, Youth mechanics learn bike mechanics and business skills as they work their way toward earning their own bike (or bike parts). In the process they will also take on new problems and projects in the shop, go on bmx and road rides with the Phoenix team, work with adult role models in the shop, and much more. Youth mechanics can work in the shop Tuesday - Saturday. They can drop-in whenever they want to, but are asked to commit to a regular schedule.
Youth mechanics become leaders and servants in making Arlington healthy physically, socially, and ecologically. Many stay at the shop long after earning their first bike and take on new roles in the shop, teaching their peers, learning new skills (from bottom bracket replacement to writing advertisements, to drawing), and gaining confidence.
We are currently accepting new youth mechanics into the earn-a-bike program. If you are a middle schooler or high school interested in joining the program, contact us or stop by the shop to pick up an application. New Youth Mechanics should arrive on Wednesdays, before 4 to submit applications, get oriented and join shop programs. See the attachments below to learn more about shop expectations and Earn-A-Bike structure.
