Our youth participants learn bicycle mechanics as they serve their community and work their way toward earning their very own bike. Along the way, they’ll take group rides with staff mentors, learn customer service skills, and build confidence.
Basic repair skills youth mechanics will master:
- Identification and use of repair tools
- Fixing flat tires
- Truing wheels
- Adjusting brakes
- Adjusting shifting
- Lots of other cool stuff
Check out the complete Earn-a-Bike Program Checklist.
Completing our basic Earn-A-Bike program takes about 25 hours. After earning their first bike, youth mechanics can earn parts, accessories, or more bikes by finding charitable ways to use their new skills or completing our advanced mechanics program.
If you’re between 12-17 years old (or in middle or high school) and interested in joining, submit a registration form and bring this signed Permission Slip & Youth Conduct Agreement with you to orientation. Orientation for new participants is required and held weekly on Tuesdays at 5pm. We recommend allotting 1 to 2 hours per work session to help keep things focused and fun (maximum of 3 hours for new youth mechanics who have not yet graduated the Earn-a-Bike program).
